Jore Sahib Handed Over to Sikh Committee, Set for Sacred 10-Day Guru Charan Yatra to Patna Sahib

Jore Sahib: A Sacred Chapter in Sikh History Reborn

New Delhi, October 23, 2025 — In a landmark moment of faith and heritage, the sacred relic Jore Sahib, the footwear of the tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh Ji, and his wife Mata Sahib Kaur Ji, was ceremonially handed over by Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri to the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) at Gurdwara Moti Bagh.

The event, steeped in devotion and reverence, marks the beginning of a 10-day Guru Charan Yatra, during which the Jore Sahib will travel from Delhi to Takht Sri Patna Sahib, the birthplace of Guru Gobind Singh Ji. The relic will be permanently enshrined there for public darshan and preservation.

A Legacy Preserved for Over 300 Years

The Jore Sahib has remained in the custodianship of the Puri family for more than three centuries. Historical accounts suggest that the footwear was presented by Guru Gobind Singh Ji himself to one of the family’s ancestors in recognition of his dedicated service. When offered any reward, the ancestor humbly requested to keep the sacred footwear as a blessing—a wish the Guru graciously fulfilled.

Over the generations, the relic was safeguarded with deep reverence, passed down as a sacred family trust. Upon the passing of the last custodian, the family decided to entrust the relics to the Sikh community to ensure that devotees across the world could have darshan and draw spiritual inspiration from the Guru’s memory.

Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri expressed humility and emotion during the handover, stating that his family felt blessed to return this revered treasure to the community of followers for whom it holds immeasurable spiritual meaning.

The Sacred Dimensions of Faith

The Jore Sahib consists of two pieces of footwear—one belonging to Guru Gobind Singh Ji and the other to Mata Sahib Kaur Ji. The Guru’s right sandal measures approximately 11 inches by 3½ inches, while Mata Sahib Kaur’s left sandal is 9 inches by 3 inches.

For the Sikh faith, these relics are not merely physical objects but sacred symbols connecting devotees directly with the spirit of Dasam Pita Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji—the founder of the Khalsa Panth, who dedicated his life to upholding righteousness, equality, and valor.

During the ceremony at Gurdwara Moti Bagh, hundreds of devotees gathered to offer prayers and participate in Kirtan Samagam, reflecting on the timeless teachings of the Guru. The atmosphere was filled with spiritual fervor, as many described the occasion as a once-in-a-lifetime blessing.

The 10-Day Guru Charan Yatra

Following the ceremony, the Guru Charan Yatra began its journey on October 23. Over ten days, the Jore Sahib will travel through several key cities before reaching Takht Sri Patna Sahib. At every stop, devotees will gather for prayers, kirtans, and langar to pay homage to the revered relic.

He further announced that once the relics reach Takht Sri Patna Sahib, arrangements will be made for permanent public viewing so that future generations can connect with their history and faith.

Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s Eternal Legacy

The 10th Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh Ji, remains a beacon of valor and spirituality. Born in Patna Sahib, he succeeded his father, Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, and played a pivotal role in shaping Sikh identity.

He founded the Khalsa Panth in 1699 at Anandpur Sahib, introducing the Five K’sKesh (uncut hair), Kangha (wooden comb), Kada (iron bracelet), Kirpan (dagger), and Kachera (short breeches)—symbols that continue to define Sikh faith and discipline.

Before his passing in 1708, Guru Gobind Singh Ji declared the Guru Granth Sahib as the eternal Guru of the Sikhs, ensuring the continuity of divine wisdom beyond the human form.

A Moment of Collective Faith

The Jore Sahib yatra is more than a ceremonial journey—it is a reaffirmation of the Sikh community’s spiritual unity and gratitude. The transition of the relic from private guardianship to collective custodianship marks a new era of accessibility, faith, and historical preservation.

For devotees, the sight of the Jore Sahib is not just a glimpse of the past—it is a living connection to Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s ideals of courage, humility, and divine purpose.

As the 10-day Guru Charan Yatra progresses toward its sacred destination, millions await the arrival of the relic at Takht Sri Patna Sahib, where the legacy of the Guru will continue to inspire generations to come.
