Terror Strikes Baisaran (Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir)
At least 26 visitors tragically lost their lives in a deadly terrorist attack that took place in the lovely Baisaran meadow near Pahalgam, turning a tranquil tourist destination into a scene of misery. In what is being called one of the bloodiest attacks on civilians in the Kashmir Valley in recent memory, over a dozen additional people suffered significant injuries.
Tourists Ambushed in Broad Daylight
The attack, which occurred during the peak of the tourist season, has sent shockwaves across the nation. A party of vacationers taking in the verdant meadows of Baisaran, sometimes known as the “Mini Switzerland” of India, were ambushed by armed insurgents. Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos and bloodshed as bullets tore through the otherwise tranquil valley.
A Family’s Nightmare
Among the victims was Manjunath, a tourist hailing from Shivamogga, Karnataka. He had been traveling with his wife, Pallavi, and their 18-year-old son for a family vacation. When shooting broke out all around them, the trip became a nightmare. Pallavi, recounting the ordeal, revealed that her husband was shot in front of her eyes. In a moment of unimaginable grief and fear, she and her son reportedly confronted one of the assailants, begging to be killed as well.

The terrorist, however, spared them with chilling words:
“I won’t kill you. Go and tell Modi.”
This statement points to the deeply political motivations behind the attack, highlighting how terrorism in the region remains entangled with ongoing tensions surrounding Kashmir.
Nation in Mourning, Government Responds
The massacre has triggered widespread condemnation across the country. Leaders from all political backgrounds have expressed solidarity with the victims and their families. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah issued strong statements condemning the act and vowed decisive action against those responsible.
Since then, security forces have started massive search efforts to find the criminals. Pahalgam and its surrounding areas have been put under high alert, with enhanced security arrangements and a temporary suspension of tourist activity.
Impact on Kashmir’s Tourism Revival
This attack is a severe blow to the ongoing efforts to revive tourism in Jammu and Kashmir. The region had been gradually regaining its place on India’s travel map, thanks to improved infrastructure and a sustained campaign to promote peace and normalcy. However, this incident has reignited fears and forced many tourists to cut their trips short and return home.
