A Record-Breaking Feat in the Heart of Eindhoven
Dutch Rowers Break Oxford University’s World Record: A team from Eindhoven University of Technology’s student rowing association, Thêta, took on an intense 10-day rowing challenge inside a transparent enclosure at Eindhoven Central railway station. Their goal was to surpass Oxford University’s world record for continuous rowing on an ergometer with a large team.
Previously, this record belonged to St Peter’s College Boat Club, University of Oxford, which logged an astounding 1,628 miles (2,620,930 metres) over 10 days in January 2024. Thêta not only shattered this record at precisely 1 PM on February 21 but continued rowing until 8 PM, extending their achievement to 10 days and seven hours.
More Than Just a Record: A Mission for Heart Health
Beyond the pursuit of sporting glory, the rowers were driven by a heartfelt cause—raising €50,000 for the Heart Foundation. Their efforts were fueled by a deep personal connection: the tragic passing of Claudia van Lieshout, a beloved Thêta rower who suffered cardiac arrest at just 21 years old. In her honor, TU Eindhoven pledged €100 per day of rowing, contributing €1,000 to the cause.
As the clock wound down, an outpouring of support from family, friends, and passersby helped Thêta reach their ambitious donation goal. The impact of their efforts was acknowledged by Anouk Brand, project officer at the Heart Foundation, who highlighted how such initiatives play a crucial role in funding life-saving cardiovascular research.
Unwavering Support and Team Spirit
Throughout the intense 10-day endeavor, the sense of camaraderie and community spirit was palpable. Thêta’s president, Ymke Tolboom, expressed immense gratitude for the encouragement received:
“The past ten days have shown us the incredible strength of unity—not just within our club, but beyond. Members cheered for each other, families made surprise visits, and even Dutch Railways staff offered their support. The enthusiasm was overwhelming.”
Their remarkable feat attracted attention from across the globe, with international supporters tuning into the livestream to offer words of encouragement.
A Sporting Triumph with Lasting Impact
The record attempt was officially launched on February 11 by Olympic silver medalist Sander de Graaf, a Thêta member and part of the Holland Eight team. His presence underscored the significance of the challenge, inspiring the rowers to push beyond their limits.
With a new world record set, a meaningful cause supported, and a legacy of perseverance established, Thêta’s achievement will be remembered as a defining moment in university rowing history. Their triumph stands as a testament to dedication, teamwork, and the power of sport to drive social impact.
