National Assembly Medals Controversy: Why Two Montreal Businessmen Are at the Center of a Scandal

The National Assembly medals controversy has erupted after two Montreal businessmen, Mike Yuval and Jack Sofer, co-founders of the Tidan real estate group, were honored this summer despite their company’s history of tax fraud, environmental fines, and union disputes.

At a ceremony held at the Marriott Château Champlain in Montreal, one of Tidan’s most prestigious properties, Christine Fréchette, Quebec’s Minister of Economy and MNA for the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ), and Jennifer Maccarone, Liberal MNA, awarded the medals individually.

According to the Assemblée nationale du Québec, these medals are designed to “recognize individuals who have made significant contributions in cultural, sports, social, or business fields.” But the honorees’ controversial past has sparked widespread criticism and raised serious questions about the vetting process.

National Assembly Medals Controversy Explained

The decision to honor Yuval and Sofer has triggered intense public backlash due to Tidan’s previous legal troubles. Critics are questioning whether entrepreneurial achievements should overshadow ethical concerns when awarding such distinctions.

Troubling Legal History of the Honorees

Tax Fraud Case in 2007

In 2007, Placements Melcor, a company owned by Yuval and Sofer, pleaded guilty to tax evasion after failing to declare nearly $1 million in revenue. The firm was fined $240,000 and ordered to repay the undeclared taxes along with additional penalties for false declarations.

Record Environmental Fine in 2016

In 2016, Environment Canada imposed a record-breaking fine of $975,000 on Tidan and seven affiliated firms for failing to comply with federal regulations on the storage and disposal of equipment containing PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls), a hazardous substance under Canadian law.

Labor Disputes and Anti-Union Allegations

Tidan has also faced long-standing union-related controversies:

  • In 2021, the Confédération des syndicats nationaux (CSN) accused the company of anti-union behavior after it dismissed a union president at the Marriott Château Champlain during ongoing labor negotiations.
  • In 2012, the Mount Stephen Club, another Tidan property, was found guilty of union interference, disrupting the process of negotiating its first collective agreement.

Lawmakers Admit Oversight

After the controversy surfaced, both MNAs responsible for awarding the medals acknowledged that they were unaware of the recipients’ complete legal history.

“Although a background check was conducted, we were not made aware of all the allegations related to Mr. Yuval’s company. We are reviewing the situation,” stated Catherine Pelletier, spokesperson for Minister Christine Fréchette.

Nour Ziat, chief of staff for MNA Jennifer Maccarone, confirmed that her office is conducting further verifications regarding the honorees.

The Tidan Group has not issued any statement regarding the growing backlash.

Broader Debate on Transparency and Ethics

The National Assembly medals controversy has ignited a larger discussion on transparency, accountability, and ethics in government-backed awards. While some argue that business success deserves recognition, critics insist that past misconduct should not be overlooked.

This incident is likely to push for stricter vetting measures to maintain public trust in the National Assembly’s recognition process.
