Montreal Protests: Montrealers Unite to Oppose U.S. Policies in Mass Protest
Several blocks of downtown Montreal became the focal point of a widespread demonstration as thousands took to the streets to express their discontent over U.S. policies. The protest, held outside the United States Consulate, was one of many that took place across Quebec in recognition of International Women’s Day.
A Unified Act of Defiance
Participants, many of whom were dressed in red to symbolize love and sacrifice, carried signs adorned with the Canadian maple leaf. Some took inspiration from The Handmaid’s Tale, wearing outfits reminiscent of the dystopian novel’s oppressed characters. Others used historical comparisons, drawing parallels between the current U.S. administration and authoritarian regimes of the past.
In a powerful gesture of solidarity, the crowd stood in silence for eight minutes, a symbolic act representing defiance against policies viewed as unjust.
Protest Leaders Express Concerns
Anaïs Barbeau-Lavalette, one of the event’s key organizers, addressed prominent U.S. figures, emphasizing that governance should not resemble a monarchy.
She stressed that leaders should not hold unchecked power, underscoring that citizens refuse to be treated as subjugated individuals.
Laure Waridel, a fellow organizer at Mères au Front, voiced her concerns regarding policies affecting women’s reproductive rights and Canada’s diplomatic ties with the U.S. She pointed to the Supreme Court’s 2022 decision to revoke the constitutional right to abortion as a significant setback for women’s rights.
Condemning the U.S. administration’s alignment with oppressive regimes, Waridel emphasized that democratic values were at stake. She further highlighted that allies should be treated with respect rather than disregard.
A Call for Collective Action
Beyond verbal opposition, demonstrators urged Canadians to resist rising authoritarian influences and encouraged boycotts of American products in response to concerning policies.
Waridel asserted that attempts to exert economic pressure through trade wars would not lead to Canada submitting to external influence.
Protests Across Quebec
Montreal’s demonstration was part of a larger movement, with similar protests occurring outside U.S. consulates in Quebec City and the U.S. Embassy in Ottawa. Additional gatherings took place in Sherbrooke, Joliette, Victoriaville, and Saguenay.
Jill Oviatt, an American-born protester, braved the cold to participate in the event. Holding a sign that likened certain U.S. leaders to parasitic forces, she explained her concern about the impact of U.S. politics on Canada.
Expressing unease over growing restrictions on freedoms, Caroline Plaat, another demonstrator, pointed out the risks faced by women and the LGBTQ community.
She acknowledged feeling an increasing sense of vulnerability due to shifting policies, particularly those affecting marginalized groups.
Since regaining political influence, Trump has introduced measures that limit transgender rights, including barring transgender athletes from women’s sports. Many participants viewed these actions as part of a broader pattern of exclusionary policies.
A Movement Fueled by Solidarity
For those in attendance, the protest represented more than just policy opposition—it was a collective stand for fundamental rights.
Plaat expressed a desire to find reassurance in a community that still believes in principles of peace and equality.
The widespread demonstrations reflect growing apprehension among Canadians regarding the reach of U.S. policies. As voices rise in opposition, the resounding message is clear: resistance remains steadfast, and the fight for rights continues.
